General Nursing
Nurses have very different responsibilities on mission than they do working as a nurse in their home country. In many locations, the basic nursing activities for patients will be done by relatives and local personnel. The international nurse will be responsible, above all else, for the management and training of local staff and assistants. Other tasks during a mission include carrying out vaccination programs, mother-child advisory service, hospital organization, hygiene measures, management of drug stocks, data collection, management of personnel, and contact with local authorities. OT nurses have their own fields of emphasis (see below).
OT Nurses
On mission, OT nurses often have to work with the most basic technical equipment and under difficult conditions. Consequently, they should have as wide-ranging practical experience as possible. Their areas of responsibility range from practical assistance during surgery to organizational duties and the training of local surgical staff. It is often their main goal to ensure the minimum standard of hygiene, even with the simplest technical equipment in the operating theatre.
